The world’s cultures are getting closer together and merging – old structures broken up, the unknown combines with the known, new things are being created. The festival ‚Turbulenzen‘ at RADIALSYSTEM V shows how stimulating and exciting these global developments can be for music. For three days, the festival presents the multifaceted creations of five ensembles that have dedicated themselves to the fusion and combination of European and Asian sound structures. The Omnibus Ensemble (Uzbekistan), The Six Tones (Vietnam/Sweden) and Ensemble Reconsil (Austria), Ensemble Extrakte (Berlin) and the AsianArt Ensemble (Berlin) mix up a variety of musical cultures and traditions, creating ‚turbulence‘ in the best sense of the word. There will be four different concerts, where they will showcase their artistic scope and perform compositions which were specially commissioned for the festival – a reflection of their insights into different musical cultures. Concert introductions and the symposium ‚Turbulence – New Roots for New Music‘, lead by Prof. Sandeep Bhagwati offer further insights into the topic of intercultural music. The symposium questions the Eurocentric focus of New Music in the 20th century, and puts a spotlight on interactions between different traditions and logics as well as people’s diverse roots from which New Music can be created. The end of the festival is also the beginning of something new: The foundation of an intercultural big band, assembled with members of all participating ensembles. At the festival’s final performance, the newly founded ensemble EAPOS – EurAsian Pool Of Sound, with approx. 20 musicians playing instruments from China, Japan, Korea, Uzbekistan, Europe and Vietnam, will premiere commissioned compositions by renowned composers, and lay the foundations for the further development of this special, cross-cultural music. A ‚turbulent‘ premiere!

The Six Tones‘ core line-up is a three-piece with a Dan Tranh (Vietnamese vaulted zither), Dan Bao (Vietnamese monochord) and guitar as well as various other plucked string instruments. The ensemble integrates video and live electronics into its multimedia projects, dissolving the boundaries between film, music, dance and drama. At the RADIALSYSTEM V festival, ‚Arrival Cities: Hanoi‘ by composer Kent Olofsson will be premiered in collaboration with the Austrian Ensemble Reconsil, conducted by Roland Freisitzer.

The Omnibus Ensemble with its Uzbek and European instruments is the only formation in Central Asia dedicated to New Music at a professional level. Since its foundation in 2004, they have created numerous unique compositions in over 150 concerts. In collaboration with composers, they experiment with new creations in their ‚Omnibus Lab‘.

The Berlin Ensemble Extrakte consists of ten musicians from China, Germany, India, Korea, Bulgaria, Syria and the USA. The formation shows a new type of ensemble concept. Since we live in a post-exotic era where musical traditions have extended beyond borders – geographical, ethnic or ideological world orders –, the cosmopolitan musicians of Ensemble Extrakte want to question the potential of both familiar and foreign musical traditions.

With instruments from China, Japan, Korea and Europe, the AsianArt Ensemble (founded in 2009) has dedicated itself to create music for their unique combination of instruments, a fusion of four different musical cultures. The ensemble is looking for new perspectives further afield from contemporary music, from mainstream New Music but also from so-called world music. Both creations based on classical notations, and planned group improvisations play an important role in the programmes by the AsianArt Ensemble.

A production by Agentur aufklang and Turbulenzen GbR. Supported by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds and the Goethe Institute as well as the Federal Foreign Office (Germany). In collaboration with matralab and Musik i Syd.
